Longbourn by Jo Baker
Review: Ms. Baker’s new take on Pride and Prejudice tells the story of the what was happening in the lives of the servants of Longbourn during the events of Jane Austen’s classic. I don’t know if it was her prose or perhaps I’m a little bit of a snob but the story wasn’t as interesting as the source material. It didn’t feel Austenian enough for me. I recognized bits and pieces of the Jane Austen I know but it wasn’t enough to overcome the glaring deficiencies and anachronisms. It left me feeling slightly angry that Ms. Baker betrayed the genius of Jane Austen through her melodramatic twisting of the story.
