The Spider and the Stone by Glen Craney
“The Spider and the Stone” takes place during the Scottish War for Independence in the 14th century. It follows the fictional account of historical characters James Douglas and Isabelle MacDuff who were key figures in the crowning of Robert Bruce as King of Scotland. Author Glen Craney has spun some impressive prose in this book. It is beautifully written. Although I don’t know many details from this time in history, the novel seemed well-researched and where it dovetails from actual known facts, the story still seems plausible. It is an excellent historical novel. My only complaint would be that time moves very quickly in the book as it covers over thirty years. Sometimes the time jumps were confusing. but overall I would recommend “The Spider and the Stone” for its tale of star-crossed love and sacrifice in the name of independence.
